An Introduction to Irish Family History

Course Description

This course explains how to begin researching your heritage, beginning with naming and baptism traditions that can help identify your Irish ancestors. We examine the difference between a civil and church parish and their importance in conducting genealogical research. We map the geographical boundaries and definitions used across Eire, including counties, parishes and townlands.

We explore different resources that can be used to research your family, including church records, Irish civil records, the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses, the Griffith's Valuation, the Bureau of Military Archives and much more. We show you how to find and interpret each record to establish its significance in relation to your family history.

Along the way, we provide tips and advice for recording your lineage and investigate people’s motivation in doing so. This informative and interesting course equips you with the knowledge you need to explore your ancestral past and arms you with valuable insights to inform your present.
