Chemistry - States of Matter

Course Description

A state of matter is one of the distinct forms in which matter can exist. This course discusses the four observable states of matter encountered in everyday life: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Plasma is the most common state of matter in the universe and we define ‘latent heat’ as the heat required to convert a solid into a liquid or vapor or a liquid into a vapor.

The course teaches you how to calculate the change in energy required to change the state of matter. We show you how to read phase and phase change diagrams and use the case study of a chilling water problem to help you master state of matter phase changes.

All things are made up of matter so studying the different phases it can go through can help you better understand the world around you. You may have heard of the ancient ‘four elements’ of earth, water, air and fire but this course can explain how they exist in accurate chemical terms. Sign up to learn what happens when matter changes from solid to liquid to gas and back again.
