Foundations of Effective Oral Communication

Course Description

This course will give you a foundation in understanding the skills you need to be an effective oral communicator. We start by examining the features of the verbal communication process and identifying the potential barriers to oral communication to ensure that you can recognise and counteract them. Next, we explain the importance of conscious and unconscious body language. You will learn the process of empathic listening and how to apply it to ensure that conversation partners feel understood and appreciated.

In addition, you will see how self-awareness is central to your success as an oral communicator. You will learn how the ‘Johari Window’ can be a tool to alert you to potential weak areas in any communication event. You will know that providing and receiving formal and informal feedback are central processes in many situations. The course will then show you the ‘5 Whys’ and the ‘Funnel’ questioning techniques that you can use to ensure the quality of the information used in a feedback event. Finally, the course will examine generational differences among communicators. You will benefit from the various communication styles and personality types.

If you are determined to be an effective oral communicator, this course provides the facts you need to analyse your current skills. You will identify areas where you can be more effective and undertake skill improvement. Additionally, since you communicate with various people in a wide range of situations, you owe it to yourself and your partners to be a most compelling communicator. So why not enrol in this course and become an effective communicator?
